Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI)
Your AGI with certain deductions added back. Used to determine eligibility for Roth IRA, premium tax credit, and other benefits.
Full explanation
MAGI is your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) with certain items added back — student loan interest deduction, tuition deduction, foreign earned income exclusion, and others. The specific add-backs depend on which tax provision is using MAGI. For Roth IRA eligibility, MAGI = AGI + some foreign income exclusions. For Premium Tax Credit (healthcare), MAGI = AGI + tax-exempt interest + non-taxable Social Security. MAGI is not a line on your tax return — it's calculated differently for each provision that uses it.
