CP14 — Balance Due

7/10 — SeriousDeadline: 21 days

The IRS processed your return and you owe money. First notice about an unpaid balance.

What this means

Your return was processed, but you owe more than what was withheld or paid. Could be self-employment income without estimated payments or insufficient withholding.

What to do

  1. 01Verify the amount against your calculations
  2. 02If you agree: pay at irs.gov/payments (Direct Pay is free)
  3. 03Can't pay in full: apply for payment plan at irs.gov/opa
  4. 04If you disagree: call the number on the notice

If you ignore this

Interest accrues daily. Follow-up notices (CP501, CP503, CP504) escalate to levies and liens.

You can handle this yourself

This is common and most people resolve it by following the steps above.
